Students, parents, and teachers alike gathered together on the night of Friday October 17th not only to support the undefeated football team, but also to witness the crowning of the class of 2015’s homecoming king and queen.
Prior to homecoming night, 10 boy and 10 girls were chosen as the Homecoming king and queen finalists. These 20 finalists were chosen based on the votes of the entire student population. Students went online to the Colonia High School website, went to The Student Council Adviser, Mrs. Rosemary Meade’s SchoolWires page, and found the link that allowed them to nominate five boys and five girls to be Homecoming king and queen. After the voting session came to a close, the senior class advisors – Mrs. Meade, Mrs. Michelina Hernandez, Ms. Anita D’Souza, and Ms. Crystal Joyce – counted the votes, and named the top ten boys and top ten girls who received the most votes.
Following this announcement, these final 20 nominees were asked to write an essay explaining their most memorable moment at Colonia High School. After completing their essays, a board of teachers reviewed each essay, and each student’s grades in all their classes throughout high school, and chose the top five boys and top five girls as Colonia High School class of 2015’s Homecoming king and queen nominees. The king nominees were Sam Pero, Sam Arencibia, Joshua Donelly, Nick Filzen, and John Fantell. The queen nominees were Kate O’Connor, Tiffany Arokiaswamy, Rachel Joe, Jenn Mulrooney, and Paige Nonnenmacher. Voting polls were opened again during homeroom for students to decide which of the top five of both boys and girls should be crowned Homecoming king and queen.
On Homecoming night, during the Colonia Varsity football game in which they faced Woodbridge, the nominees waited patiently for half time. With a half time score of Colonia with 28 points and Woodbridge with 21 points, the game was paused in order to announce the class of 2015’s Homecoming king and queen. Each nominee was walked down the field, boys with their mother and girls with their father, to the student-made arch, while the announcer spoke of each student’s accomplishments during their time at Colonia High School. After each student completed their walk with their parent, the announcer patiently announced Colonia High School class of 2015’s Homecoming king and queen. After the painstaking process of voting, both by students and teachers, the Homecoming king was announced to be Sam Pero, and the homecoming queen was announced to be Rachel Joe. Overjoyed by their success, they each stood beneath the arch, as they were crowned, and continued off the field. While Pero returned to playing the Homecoming football game, Joe took her spot cheerleading, and each continued the game against Woodbridge.
After a rough start to the football game, in which Woodbridge scored twice within the first five minutes of the game, Colonia came back with vengeance, and defended their undefeated title. The game came to a close with Colonia scoring 49 points and Woodbridge scoring 27 points, leaving Colonia with a 6-0 winning streak.
